A Decade of Contest Calling All Began With Doug Miller
I will never forget my first conversation with the late Doug Miller as we met to discuss the idea i had of holding a nationally ranked calling competition at the ISE show. He walked me to a small room and said what do you think? It took some arm wrestle, to which Doug was not accustom to losing before i was finally happy with the space that i felt was needed for an event such as this. We went from a tiny 800 square foot room to a 6000 sq foot arena. When Doug walked around the corner to officially launch the contest on that night and his face had that Arkansas smile. This event meant a lot to Doug over the years and he was always there to kick it off and express his love for calling. I later had the opportunity to share a dinner with Doug in Stuttgart Arkansas, During the World Duck Calling Championship. Our stories shifted from memories of time in the blind, to good dogs and bad shooting. But one part of that conversation continues to bring a sense of accomplishment to me, when Doug said “I am so proud of what you have done with the Utah calling competition”, a compliment from a guy like Doug puts a lot of fuel in your tank. Now a decade later, the contest caller arena in the ISE show is the single longest running calling event here in the west.
